Introducing Dr. William Lewis of HealthSource of La Porte

La Porte, Texas chiropractor, Dr. William Lewis

Chiropractic helped me so much I decided to become a chiropractor and help people experience not only the pain relief, but the wellness lifestyle that I was introduced to almost 20 years ago.

I knew early on that I wanted to become a doctor and help people with their health challenges and had decided to become a surgeon of some kind. When I was 15 years old, I woke up with excruciating low back pain that was shooting all the way down both of my legs! This really scared me. I knew there had to be an underlying cause that needed to be addressed and that while taking medicine may help me feel better, it would likely not fix the underlying problem. I had seen commercials for a local chiropractor on TV and asked my mother to set an appointment for me. I thought I would just go in and he would "pop" my back and send me on my way, but he took time to educate me as to what chiropractic was all about, how it worked, why it worked. After two treatments, my back and leg pains were gone! I was still set on becoming a surgeon. I continued with regular preventative "adjustments" and about a year later, my life changed forever! I was in the gym lifting weights when a friend of mine asked me to spot him during his bench press. He was pressing 315 pounds and on his last repetition, his arms gave out from exhaustion and the bar full of weight started to fall down toward his neck and head! I pulled up hard on the bar so he could escape injury, and in doing so, I felt white hot searing pain in my right wrist and hand! All I could think of was my career as a surgeon slipping away due to an injured hand. The pain was so bad and I could not close my hand, grip the steering wheel, or lift a can of beans. I went to visit an orthopedist that I knew from church. After some tests and x-rays, he explained that, in his opinion, I had injured some ligaments and tendons and that I should ice it, wrap it, and lay off of weight lifting for six weeks. SIX WEEKS! NO WAY! I went immediately to my chiropractor and after three days of consecutive adjustments to my wrist and hand, he told me I was back to normal and could go lift weights. I thought there was no way I could be as strong as before after just three days. I was wrong! I had no pain while lifting and was just as strong as before. Three days instead of six weeks! This was so amazing to me that I started researching chiropractic as a profession so I could help people experience better health through natural chiropractic care.

I attended Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas, TX. I chose Parker after doing a ton of research about chiropractic and the different schools available to me. I felt Parker College fit the best with my philosophy of health and healing and it was just four hours from where I grew up so I could still be close to family and friends. The most surprising thing about the education at Parker College was the level of difficulty. I thought that it would be four years of chiropractic philosophy and adjusting techniques with some basic sciences thrown in for good measure. I was wrong! The first two years was all science. I spent hours and hours studying courses like gross anatomy, microbiology, cell biology and embryology. Why did I need to know how a human being is formed in order to get people well? This was one of the hardest classes, but is the basis for understanding how our bodies work. The neurology classes were just as intense and many people that I started the first semester with were dropping out at this point. I later compared my education to that of a medical doctor and found that they are almost identical except for the method of treatment.

The foundation of our practice is total body wellness for the whole family. We understand that our patients-even the little ones, are under physical, chemical and psychological stresses everyday and we strive to provide natural ways for our them to limit the effects that these harmful stresses have on their bodies. We strive to provide the best care possible while making care efficient and affordable. We want to make sure there are no barriers that would keep families from getting the care they want and need. Our most popular payment option allows an entire family to get all the care they may need and pay for it at their own pace - we want to reduce stress not increase it. Most people come in to our office initially to get rid of some kind of pain or dysfunction and when they see the difference that chiropractic makes in their daily lives at home and at work, they choose to get the rest of the family involved and make regular chiropractic care part of their life. I have seen some pretty amazing responses to chiropractic care in my career. Things like a man not needing his glasses anymore, a man suffering with constant hiccups for two weeks immediately stop after just one adjustment, many colicky babies start sleeping through the night after just a couple of adjustments, arthritic bone spurs completely disappear and so many others. It is so awesome every time someone's life is changed forever! This is what we expect every time someone begins care.

Being a father of three beautiful kids: Bayleigh-12, Parker-8 and Lynken-4, keeps my wife Traci and I extremely busy as I'm sure you can imagine. Bayleigh and Parker excel in school and love playing outside. Parker loves race cars and motorcycles (like dad) and Bayleigh enjoys crafting and shopping (like mom). Away from the office, I love playing golf, watching sports of any kind, especially football, and riding motorcycles.

Personally, I receive chiropractic care an average of once per week. Being as active as I am, I want to make sure I am in the best shape possible and that goes for my spine and nerve system also. I am in the gym about four days per week, I cycle three times per week, I play golf at least one day per week, I play softball once per week and I ride my motorcycle as much as possible. Add those activities to being in the office adjusting patients four and a half days a week (which is very physically demanding) and I would be bed-ridden if I didn't get my spine adjusted regularly. Combined with my workout and recreational activities, I make sure I eat a healthy well-balanced diet and drink about a gallon of pure water each day. Although I do have a bit of a sweet tooth, I make sure I don't over do it. I supplement my diet with fish oils, plenty of B vitamins and lots of anti-oxidants. My family gets adjusted weekly as well or whenever the kids fall down hard or jump on the trampoline too long. Except for emergencies, which are rare, my family does not take over the counter or prescription medications or antibiotics. We know that the body can and will heal itself as long as there are no underlying problems that interfere with it's ability to do so. As long as we get regular adjustments, eat right, exercise, get plenty of rest and mental relaxation, drink plenty of water, and take our supplements, we will live the healthiest and happiest lives possible.

Dr. Lewis Asks some important questions of interest to La Porte residents - Chiropractor La Porte Dr. Lewis Asks...

How do you know when you're healthy?
Ask most La Porte residents this simple question and you're likely to hear, "When you feel good" or "When you're at your proper weight for your height" or "When you have lots of energy and vitality." Great answers. But our chiropractic patients know that true health is when your body is working as it was designed. True health is how you function, not how you feel.
What's your plan to deal with drug-resistant 'super germs'?
Chiropractors have always been concerned with the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, accelerating the mutation of microbes that make "wonder" drugs increasingly ineffective. My strategy? Do everything possible to bolster my immune system through proper diet, rest, exercise, clean air, pure water and an optimally functioning nervous system with regular chiropractic care.
